RFU Dignitaries Visit Cambourne Exiles RFC

On the afternoon of Saturday 17th November, Cambourne Exiles RFC hosted a visit by senior dignitaries from the Rugby Football Union at Twickenham as part of their weekend "Roadshow" visit to the Eastern Counties. After a question and answer session on Friday evening at Diss RFC and a visit to the West Suffolk College Rugby School on Saturday morning, Francis Baron (RFU Chief Executive), Martyn Thomas (RFU Chairman), John Owen (RFU Chairman of Community Rugby) and Andrew Schoular (RFU Director of Community Rugby), accompanied by senior members of Cambridgeshire RFU and Eastern Counties Rugby Union, icluding Alec Motts, Nigel Jones, Andrew Sarek and Roger Pierson arrived for lunch at The Monkfield Arms in Cambourne. After a chat over drinks, the party then moved to Cambourne's rugby pitch to watch the fixture between the Exiles and Saffron Walden 3rd XV. In the wake of the recent world cup, the RFU are promoting grassroots rugby within the community. Cambourne Exiles RFC, in only their second full season, are widely regarded as an up-and-coming club in Cambridgeshire and are making excellent progress despite the lack of facilties promised by the development consortium in the town. Before the match kickoff, Francis Baron and Martyn Thomas awarded RFU's Value the Volunteers certificates to Exiles members, Will Charter, Mark Griffiths and Neil Ingham to acknowledge their efforts in establishing the club. Alec Motts (Chairman of Cambridgeshire RU) was awarded an RFU VIP tie to celebrate his outstanding contributions to the sport of Rugby over many years. Saffron Walden RUFC were awarded the RFU's Seal of Approval. With all the formalities completed, the match got underway. Saffron dominated the first half, building an unassailable lead. Cambourne fought back with admirable spirit to peg back the deficit with the match ending in a 19:40 win for the away team.
