Sawston 2 - 17:69 - Cambourne Exiles

Cambourne make winning start to 2011

Today’s game saw the exiles travel south to sawston for what would be a great forwards game. The match started off with the exiles kindly lending two of their players, due to sawston being short in the pack.

The first ten minutes started off slowly for Cambourne with missed tackles and school boy errors. After a swift talking-to by the Vice Captain, the Exiles upped their game to what would be a big try-fest and constant turning over of balls by Scott Conway, Millar and Greaves.

Great forward work by the Exiles saw the pack rucking and mauling all over the park, constant pick-and-drive balls gave Cambourne the chance to make good ground which lead to the first try being scored by the skipper Ben Yeats.

The pack dominated the rest of the game with similar passages of play and great turn over ball. With the backs seeing little ball at this point, half-back Chris Wallis took his chances to beat the oppositions defence and run over the line twice.

More forwards play gave Exiles flanker Craig Millar the chance to dive over the white wash. The second half began with the Exiles playing down hill giving the backs a chance to open their legs. Great crash ball by centre Keith Robinson gave him the opportunity to drag some Sawston players in and create an overlap for hooker clive lees to make a 30 yard dash for the try line.

More flowing rugby from the forwards and the veteran 10 Mark Lisher, gave centre Paul Greaves the chance to make a 20 yard run for the line beating the Sawston defence and slot another try in for the Exiles. The forward continued to drive over the white wash with more tries from Yeats and Wallis.

With time ticking down, the backs where given one more chance to create some beautiful running moves and outstanding footwork, which lead to winger Chris Harlow slotting another try. In the club house after the game Clive Lees was awarded Man-of-the-Match and downed the now-customary funnelled pint of beer in great style!
